Buffalo Grove mosquito pool tests positive for West Nile — Buffalo ...

A pool of mosquitoes in Buffalo Grove was tested positive for West Nile Virus, Lake County Health Department recently announced.

The mosquito pool, sampled August 4, is the first indicator of the disease confirmed in Lake County this year. In 2010, a man and 29 mosquito pools tested positive for the virus in the county.

Culex mosquitoes, the mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus, are not related to wet weather and the mosquitoes swarming the area experienced earlier this year, but tend to thrive in dry conditions, officials said.

The mosquitoes will be active in the fall until the first frost, said Irene Pierce, executive director of the Ministry of Health.

Department officials recommend limiting outdoor activity at dusk whenever possible, wear light-colored clothing that minimizes exposed skin, using insect repellent and make sure door and window screens fit tightly.

Most people infected show no symptoms of illness, but some may become ill, usually three to 15 days after the bite.In some individuals, particularly the elderly, the virus can cause muscle weakness, inflammation of the brain, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, coma or death.

Residents can call the West Nile virus hotline at 847-377-8300 to report standing water or learn more about the virus.
