Hurricane Irene cancels Byram Township family wedding for a second time
BYRAM — Not again, Suzanne Cubberly thought as she traced Hurricane Irene’s projected path up the East Coast and right down her wedding aisle.
But yes, again. Today marks the second time Mother Nature would have crashed a Cubberly wedding. Just hours before the storm is expected to barge into New Jersey, Cubberly had planned to arrive at the church for a wedding she and her husband have waited four decades to redo.
"I can’t believe it’s happening again," Cubberly, 59, of Byram Township, said of her now-canceled nuptials. "It’s completely unreal."
The first time uninvited weather showed up was Aug. 28, 1971, almost 40 years to the day, when Tropical Storm Doria overwhelmed the Chimney Rock Reservoir in Bridgewater, breaking the dam and flooding the Raritan River and surrounding towns.
John Cubberly, the groom, drove to the church sitting in his car in waist-high water. His brother was perched on the hood of the car, navigating through sheets of rain.
The reception hall canceled. Guests didn’t show. But the ceremony, small, wet and stressful, went on — largely because it had to. John Cubberly, who had just returned from fighting in Vietnam, only had a weekend pass from the military and the couple’s marriage license would soon expire.
Their wedding blues didn’t end with the weather, though. The honeymoon hotel the Cubberly's booked was closed due to flooding and they wound up with other storm refugees at an inn two hours away. The couple hopped in the car so quickly they didn’t realize their gas tank was low, and they ran out halfway to the hotel.
"We promised each other after that to do it right one day," Cubberly said.
In the early years of their marriage, raising two children and finances didn’t allow for such a luxury. The couple toyed with the idea on their 25th anniversary but opted for a small home gathering instead. This year seemed perfect for their delayed nuptials.

But as news of the hurricane spread, guests concerned about driving back to Boston or the Jersey Shore started canceling. "I probably wouldn't have been able to enjoy myself. I'd be worrying about everyone," she said. "And it'd be just like last time.
