Church tailgates with the best of them

CHATHAM -“It's 1.38 miles to GHS, we got a full tank of gas, 300 hotdogs, it's dusk, and we're wearing sunglasses.”

Okay, so Elwood Blues didn’t quite phrase it that way, but Chatham Baptist Church is on a mission from God when it comes to football. The church has been tailgating at every Glenwood High School football game for roughly seven years now, and they’ve got tailgating down to a science.

Jerry Weber, only seems appropriate to have a man whose last name is the same as the company that is synonymous with grills, is the minister of education and administration at CBC. Weber along with a small team of fellow CBC members including, CBC senior pastor, Milton Bost, John Hughes, Jim Campbell and Brian Schwartz had a game plan ready hours before the game. While Weber didn’t have a clipboard with X’s and O’s he had a long list of items that the crew needed prior to their departure for the first home game of the Glenwood High School Titans football team. 

The typical home game day routine begins at 2:30 p.m. for the small team of tailgaters. They congregate at CBC and load up their trucks and a small covered trailer with everything they need: a large propane grill, several large coolers, hot dogs, buns, condiments, chips, a few picnic tables and not much else. But the sheer number of items is somewhat mind boggling: 300 hot dogs, an equal amount of buns, hundreds of cans of soda, about six picnic tables, and much more. All of the food and drink used for the event was donated either by members of CBC or the County Market in Chatham. Any food that isn’t eaten prior to the game is saved for the football players after the game.

“It’s a wonderful community outreach event for us,” Weber said.

What began as a few guys getting together before the home games with just a couple of picnic tables has grown exponentially over the years. The only thing that might slow the growth is the size of the trailer.
