CORVALLIS, Ore. - Three people have deep roots in Wallowa County were honored Wednesday, October 17, 2007 as pioneers of diamonds by the Oregon State University College of Agricultural Sciences.

Scholars from Wallowa County are Doug and Janie Tippett, Joseph, and Arleigh Isley, former Wallowa County judge who now lives in La Grande. They are among the 38 men and women nominated this year for the college's Diamond Pioneer Registry Agricultural Achievement during a luncheon hosted by Dean Thayne Dutson of Agriculture.

The register, now in its 24th year, was created to honor the achievements of 74 years and over in agriculture and related fields and their communities .. Wallowa County producers Stock, Wallowa County Extension staff and the OSU Department of Animal Sciences nominated the three for these honors.

Growing up in the bottom of the creek Joseph, Doug Tippett and his family used exclusively for packaging and mules working ranch, with World War II. And tractors were added to the mules used to pack salt and camp gear.While at Washington State University, Tippett was a member of the rodeo team, winning the saddle bronco riding. In 1963 he won the buckle cowboy around the Rodeo Joseph amateur.

Janie Tippett moved to Wallowa County in 1968. Later, she started cooking for luxury hunting camps on the upper Imnaha River, Manford Isley ran when the packing station at Indian Crossing. She found herself cooking in most out-of-the-way places.

After his military service, Doug Tippett back in the county to run the ranch Dug Bar, a livestock operation that later purchased by his father.In 1978, he and Janie were married and they have maintained a large cattle operation. They added the production of certified seed in 1972. They were among the first in the area to introduce the line Simental in their breeding program.

In 1980, they sold the cattle to the permit for the Bar Dug and concentrated ranching on the place the house on Prairie Creek and the Salmon Creek area dry.
