Wal-Mart evacuated after shots fired; no one hurt
-- The Wal-Mart store in Plaza Parkway in Modesto was evacuated this afternoon after shots were fired outside in the parking lot, police said.Although there were reports of multiple gunshots shortly before 5 p.m., police initially indicated that no one had been hit. At least one vehicle in the parking lot had been struck by several bullets, though.
The store is at Sisk Road and Plaza Parkway.
Police were searching for a white vehicle with dealer plates that witnesses saw fleeing the scene. A short time later, officers reported having a car and several suspects at gunpoint at Gulfstream Drive and Carver Road.
Officers then got word there was a possible suspect inside the store talking on a cell phone and becoming agitated. He reportedly was trying to leave Wal-Mart through the main doors, but spotted officers arriving outside.
He went back inside but was apprehended a short time later without incident.
At about the same time, police received reports from a person inside the Kohls department store near Wal-Mart claiming someone had shot at him, but he wasnt believed to be injured.
Police were told two suspects had jumped a wall behind Kohls and run into a adjacent apartment complex.
A SWAT team was called to the scene and the store still was evacuated at 6:20 p.m.
