Minnie Mouse to the Rescue on Toddler's Flight Across the Pacific

Few things try one’s patience more than a toddler cooped up in an airplane thousands of feet in the air.

Before I had my daughter, I used to groan inwardly upon seeing a family with young children boarding my plane.

“People shouldn’t travel with kids younger than 4,” I’d stupidly say to my husband. I just knew I’d be the one sitting in front of the kid screaming at the top of his lungs—a saying I never quite understood but feel is appropriate here—and kicking my seat.

Ah, well, my karmic retribution came in the shape of an energetic toddler. Now I’m the person other travelers eye warily.

And we can’t help but fly. Derek’s family is in Hawaii, which means it’s either a few hours by plane or days by ship. (Unless you kayak 2,756 miles across the Pacific Ocean as suggested by Google maps—try Google mapping directions for La Mesa to Honolulu and see No. 17.)

Still, Derek and I tried our best to prepare for the mighty Quinn before our most recent trip to Hawaii.

Derek, being the guy’s guy he is, decided the best way to control her was to load up the iPad with child-friendly apps and familiar videos. He had Yo Gabba Gabba! , all ready to entertain a restless 2-year-old.

I discovered his playlist after I asked him when we’d buy Quinn’s special toy for the airplane ride.

“Oh, we don’t need to buy anything. I already bought a ton of iPad goodies,” he boasted.

“I don’t think that will sustain her attention for more than five hours,” I said.

“It doesn’t have to,” Derek replied. “She’ll eat and nap between.”

Call me a cynic, but I didn’t buy what he was selling. I know my daughter. When she’s revved up, there’s no getting her to nap. And lately her diet has consisted of whatever-she-doesn’t-spit-out.

Lucky me. My friend, Maddie, was heading to Disneyland the weekend before we left. She’s familiar with Quinn and readily agreed to pick up a few little Minnie Mouse surprises to spring on my Mouse-crazed toddler on the plane.

Articles 20VN | Should I Reward My Child For Using The Potty ...

You have probably come across potty training sticker charts and other rewards systems that parents use when potty training their children. Some parents will simply use the stickers as a reward, others will reward their child's overall progress with a bigger prize or present (like a new toy) once they get a certain amount of stickers on their chart. Some parents are reporting success with using small candies like M&Ms as a reward for using the potty.

Is using a rewards system during potty training a good idea or are we just bribing our children? It's a good question and of course brings up some valid concerns that you may have as a parent entering into the world of potty training.

You most definitely have to be careful how you use a rewards system when potty training. You want it to be encouraging, easy to attain the rewards, yet challenging enough to make your child try.

You apparently also have to be careful how you word the "terms" of the reward to your toddler. A friend of mine promised her boy a particular toy car that he wanted if he didn't do number two in his pants for two weeks. The boy didn't; in fact, he didn't poop at all during those two weeks, which ended with an enema in the doctor's office. Of course this story is a little extreme, but nevertheless it stresses the point that we need to be very clear with our kids about what we expect in return for the potty training reward.

For me personally, a combination of lots of verbal praise and a potty training chart that showed the child's progress with stickers has worked best. But every child is different, has his or her own personality. Your child may respond better to a few M&Ms or a larger toy. Try what you feel would motivate your child the most. If it doesn't seem to work, you can always move on to a different rewards system.
