Impending storm no match for a country hoedown at Gillette

FOXBORO — Kenny Chesney had to reschedule his Sunday-night show at Gillette Stadium (intended to be the second of two performances) to Friday night because of the threatening weather from Irene, but he said late in the two-hours-plus show: “We’re gonna try to throw a hurricane party anyway.” Well, he did that, with some help from his friends. But we’ll get to that in a minute.

Chesney had been an annual fixture at Gillette, but last year he skipped Foxboro for the first time in seven years (“We missed you guys!”) while he put the finishing touches on his latest disc, “Hemingway’s Whiskey.” He came out of the gate Friday night with two songs from the new disc, “Live a Little” (which saw him pop out of the tent housing the soundboard in the middle of the field sitting on a trapeze which carried him to the stage) and “Reality” — “everybody needs to break free from reality,” he sang.

If it all sounds a little Hollywood, well, it was. Chesney has long worked in the Jimmy Buffett vein, as a good-natured, easy-going emcee of good times in sandy locales — not for nothing was this called the Goin’ Coastal Tour, of which Foxboro is the last stop. And the sun continued to shine, figuratively, with the anthem “Summertime”; the ’80s rock of “Beer in Mexico,” a lower-case “Margaritaville” about drinking away the pain; and later “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems.”

From there, though, the songs went back to more personal, country-esque (if still Nashville-hit-worthy) territory, with Anything But Mine” and the piano-led fatherhood ode “There Goes My Life” leading the way.

The highlight of the show came in the middle, when Chesney broke out “You and Tequila,” his duet with Grace Potter from the “Hemingway’s Whiskey” disc, performed solo on acoustic guitar.
