Artist takes the term 'living room' literally

Hey, if it catches, the owners will not be lazy to get off the sofa to mow the lawn.

The whimsical room, installed on a low platform in an old outdoor rink is "carpet" in the grass. It includes a hollow wooden coffee table and end table with plants such as coleus, sedum, zinnias and petunias overflowing, and a wooden rocking chair with a cushion of grass and a pillow of thyme.

"I like art that people can touch and use, and comfortable," said Swendrowski, 36, who responded to a call from the Winnipeg Arts Council (WAC) public art program to serve Artist residency in downtown community gardens this summer.

The gardens, which are becoming more popular every year, have tended plots or boxes by individuals or families. Swendrowski thought that if she made the nature-based groupings of furniture invite gardeners can get together and sow the seeds of the community. Volunteers have helped build the furniture forward.

The project has been set up since late July, but it is a success, especially with children. There are six community gardens furniture, but the group is the most developed at the rink-turned-garden at the center of Valour Orioles Community corner of St. Matthews Avenue and Burnell.

Passersby often smile, ask if they can sit down and try to quip: "It's a giant chia pet!" Swendrowski said.

Residents of Windsor Park, a passionate gardener, working on his master's degree in landscape architecture and studied sculpture at the University of Manitoba.She first saw furniture living in a magazine six years ago.

There are different methods to make sofas and poufs of grass, she said. For each of the couches, she used a basic four straw bales rectangular in shape with an electric shears. It coated the base with a "liquid mud" about an inch thick, made of earth, straw and water, then place the grass is trimmed and secured with metal staples home. The grass is now well rooted in the mixture of mud. Each sofa costs about $ 50 to do.
