Employment outlook for veterans in Richmond
Today is Veteran's Day, and as we in Henrico and the greater Richmond metropolitan area commemerate and celebrate the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women, it is tempered with concern for the high jobless rate that hangs over their heads.
Based on study results gathered by military.com and USAA , Oklahoma City was ranked #1 out of 379 mettropolitan areas in the country to get a job. Richmond, Va. and Norfolk, Va. placed second and third.
The criteria required to gain this status is revealing. Primary is the number of jobs available that enhance military skills. The studies also looked at the number of Veteran-owned businesses and the number of federal jobs in the area. Last but certainly not least was the area's unemployment rate.
Richmond and Norfolk certainly fit into the criteria very well. Virginia ranks second with the number of veterans calling the state home, and our military-industrial complex is second to no other state.
The cold hard facts dealing with unemployment rates are hard to dismiss. The military.com study also broke down the jobless rates for veterans in the 18-24 year old age group with non-veterans in the same age group. It was found that veterans had a 30% jobless rate as compared to their peers who had a 15% jobless rate.
What is it that makes Richmond and Norfolk good places to find a job? It is not only the criteria already mentioned, but what employers are looking for.
They look for the discipline, willingness to learn, the ability to follow instructions and the dedication that the members of our military exhibit in todays armed services. They also look at the technical skills and military experience of our veterans.
Tomorrow we will investigate several companies that have joined hands with the Virginia Employment Commission and the military to create programs , and jobs for our service people.
