Poetic tributes to Tess Meisel, a life lost too soon
At a Westport Library tribute Wednesday to Tess Meisel, 12, who was killed last week in a motor vehicle accident, friends and family used a magnetic board to compose their own thoughts and poems about the young poet and musician. Tanner said she named her daughter for the Hardy character. Photo: Meg Barone / Westport News freelanceSuzanne Tanner spoke poetically and emotionally at the Westport Public Library on Wednesday about the many nights that she stood in the kitchen of her family's Westport home cooking dinner as her daughter, Tess Meisel , sat on the sofa in the kitchen writing in her journal.
"It's still such a joy thinking of all those moments," Tanner said.
Mother and daughter can no loner share those joyous moments. Tess was killed last week when a tractor-trailer crashed into the back of a YMCA van in which she was a passenger traveling through Farmington, Maine. Tanner and the rest of Tess's family are comforted now by the wisdom and beauty of the 12-year-old's words, which she left behind in her prolific prose and poetry.
Until her death, most of Tess's work had been kept private, but in the library's tribute to Tess on Wednesday, Tanner, her daughter's friends and library staff read some of the girl's poems and those of other authors whose words seemed appropriate for the occasion. Tanner also read a paragraph from the Thomas Hardy novel, "Tess of the D'Urbervilles," for which Tess was named by her parents.
