Pathfinder, Wold plan to develop large wind farm
Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy and the Wold Companies have agreed to partner on the development of a large Carbon County wind energy project.
Holly Wold, project manager for the Wold Companies, said the Whirlwind I project will be located in a checkerboard pattern of private and public land southwest of Rawlins.
The eventual size of the project will be determined by factors like transmission capacity and siting constraints. Wold said land will be leased for purposes of the project, and none has been purchased.
In terms of power transmission, Wold said, “We’re mainly looking at the TransWest Express Project, but we’re also looking at some of the other transmission projects in Wyoming.”
The TransWest Express Transmission Project, being developed by Anschutz Corp., has a proposed terminal near Whirlwind I. Wold said TransWest Express proposals have indicated the power would be destined for the Southwest, and most likely California.
At the same time, Whirlwind I, if interconnected with PacifiCorp.’s system, could serve the Rocky Mountains or the Northwest, she said. “It really depends on what transmission line we’re able to obtain capacity on.”
Wold said the amount of Whirlwind I electrical generation also could depend upon how much capacity is available on the TransWest Express. It now appears there will be up to 1,000 megawatts.
For Whirlwind I, “we’re looking at somewhere between four and seven hundred megawatts of power,” she said.
But it’s still early in the process and no agreements are in place, Wold noted.
A joint press release from the companies indicates that Whirlwind I is actively being permitted, and an environmental study process with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management is set to begin soon. The proposed in-service date of the project is 2015.
Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy, headquartered near Alcova, owns and operates the Pathfinder Ranch. Sammons Power Development, a subsidiary of Dallas-based Sammons Enterprises, is the lead partner in Pathfinder.
