Former Seacoast residents star in antiques reality TV show
Jerry, originally from North Andover, Mass., moved to Hampton, where Jeremiah was raised. The pair then lived in Rye from 2004 to 2008.
For six to eight months out of the year, the Pasternaks stay in Florida, where buyers are scarce and the supply is high. Over the summer, they return to New England with their "mantiques" and sell their finds at Antique & Unique, their store in Rockland, Maine.
"We've been talking for the longest time about how what we do is so interesting and our characters are interesting enough. If anyone has a show, it should be us," Jeremiah said, adding they teamed with Planet Green due to the popularity of other shows in the genre, such as "Antiques Roadshow."
"I think it's going to be the best show on TV," Jerry said.
Antiquing has been Jerry's profession for about 30 years. Jeremiah can recall accompanying his father to sales when he was 6, but he started antiquing in earnest five years ago, after graduating from college. The types of items the duo have scored at flea markets and antiques shows include jukeboxes, classic cars, old barber shop chairs and a 15-foot plane propeller.
They recently purchased two items Jerry had been fond of for years, a copper cupola and a 20-foot round stained glass image of a giant red lobster. They had not been able to purchase the pieces for a decent enough price in the past.
According to Jeremiah, having a camera crew following them took getting used to and each episode got exponentially better. Filming was conducted two weeks at a time, followed by a two-week break.
"I think you can tell by mid-season we look really comfortable," Jeremiah said, adding the featured items for sale improve as the season progresses.
The show lets its audience see that anyone can break into the antiquing business. "We're trying to show that people can do what we do," Jerry said. "We've been going to yard sales and flea markets and antique shows for all our lives.
