Highway 62 Road Trip Completes Local Woman's 'Bucket List'

MUHLENBERG COUNTY, KY (8/19/11) - Highway 62 runs through Muhlenberg County, through Nelson Creek, Central City, Greenville and into Nortonville. This road is traveled by nearly every county resident, on a daily basis.

On September 8, at Niagra Falls, New York, Marilyn's Route 62 Road Trip officially began. The Four Sixes is a working ranch that spans over a quarter-million acres. At the Four Sixes, the ladies met a movie-star cowboy, real cowboys (with spurs on their boots) and ate lunch at a little grocery store where shotgun shells and peanut butter cookies are merchandised on the same shelf. "This was probably the best day we had, spending the day at the ranch," Marilyn said. Fifty-five miles south of Carlsbad, in the Chihuahuan Desert, the Guadalupe Mountains National Park and El Capitan's 8,085-feet high peek provided some of the many beautiful sites along the trip.

Around 12 PM, on April 2, Marilyn, Regina and Dianna made it to El Paso, Texas, to location that Highway 62 runs into Juarez, Mexico.

While in El Paso, the ladies were excited to watch the University of Kentucky play in the Final Four. In the spirit of fun and hometown pride, "We thought it would be fun to find a sports bar in El Paso and hoop and hollar for UK," Marilyn said. The girls couldn't find a worthy venue or any Texan's to get fired up about basketball, so they finished the game in their room. At 86-years-old, Marilyn Kirtley's experiences have taken her to every state in the union, to Europe 10 times, to South America, and across Canada by train.

Although the Route 62 Road Trip was the last item to be marked off her bucket list, Mrs. Kirtley went zip-lining at Loucon, in Leitchfield this summer, where she volunteers. She also caught a couple ball games in Chicago a few weeks ago with the Lyons Club, and after our interview for this article, Marilyn was preparing to leave for a Caribbean cruise with her beautiful grand-daughter, Kara Kirtley. "I am satisfied if I never go anywhere else, but I have a policy. I have always said, if anyone called me, I would go, and I could be ready in fifteen minutes." Those who know Marilyn Kirtley, know that this is a true statement and admire that about her.

FIELD OF DREAMS AUCTION  HITS GRAND SLAM!

What a night!  Thank you to the many event attendees, donors, sponsors, volunteers and supporters of every kind who helped make Lawton history Saturday night at the Lawton Field of Dreams Auction!  Together this community came together and raised a net $100,000 for the Lawton PTA!! This funding ensures we can continue the many arts, safety, tutoring, enrichment, community, cultural and more programs vital to our kids’ unique experience here at Lawton.  The spirit of hope and generosity in the room at Safeco was palpable and made us all proud to be part of such a caring community of parents, friends and staff.
