What is up with the pain in Arroyo's neck?

For the past two months, Gloria Arroyo has had to be rushed to the hospital several times for a medical condition described as a “pinched nerve,” reportedly causing her severe neck pain.
Severe neck pain/”pinched nerve”/compression of the vertebral nerves in the cervical region/intermittent cervicalgia/cervical spondylosis are synonyms of the condition and often accompanied by neck stiffness, with radiation of pain into the shoulders or occipital area.
The reality is that the neck is a multi-articulated structure whose gross motion and appearance of unitary movement is, in reality, the coordinated summation of numerous small movements. The certainty is that the neck can only perform its functions normally through those myriads of miniscule reflexes that normal neurological function must monitor and coordinate continuously. So powerfully delicate in their usual coordination, yet an instant of excessive abuse can throw them into a fury that can cause an episode of previously unimagined disorder. Intermittent neck pain, or cervicalgia, significantly affects patients’ quality of life.

One third of patients with neck pain present with headache and greater than two-thirds present with unilateral or bilateral shoulder pain. A recent study reported that greater than one third of patients with neck pain have anxious or depressed moods related to their decreased neck mobility. In addition to age and possibly sex, several risk factors have been anticipated for neck pain. Repeated occupational trauma (e.g., carrying axial loads, professional dancing, computer work and gymnastics) may contribute. Smoking also may be a risk factor.
Treatments for neck pain include chiropractic manipulation, lifestyle modifications, instruction in body mechanics, relaxation techniques, postural awareness, ergonomics or workplace modifications.
