Rocky sandwich maker heads south
IF ROCKHAMPTON’S Lorelle Parker gets a roll on she could soon find herself on a New York Sandwich Safari.
Lorelle is Rockhampton’s representative in the Northern Final at The Great Australian Sandwichship in Sydney next month.
The Big G’s Takeaway and Catering proprietor, who estimates she whips up between 500 and 700 sandwiches a week, will have to impress the judges in the MasterChef-style sandwich competition.
She will have to make three sandwiches from the four categories – Toasted Sandwich, Wrap, Lunch Roll and Creative Sandwich.
If Lorelle’s creations are judged the best of the northern and southern areas she will be on her way to the Big Apple.
“I’ve had many sleepless nights thinking about what I would do,” Lorelle said yesterday.
She has already submitted her recipes.
“I saw the competition in a magazine and thought I would give it a go,” said Lorelle, who is in her second year of running Big G’s, which is located on Richardson Rd. “I was absolutely ecstatic to get through to the final.”
She said she’d submitted her drover sandwich, using corned meat and pickles, which is now available on the Big G’s menu, a fruit bread-based toastie that includes fresh strawberries and a Mediterranean style wrap with char-grilled lamb, feta cheese and mint dressing.
She said the sandwich scene was changing as customers
became more adventurous.
However, there were those who stuck to their favourites.
“I’ve not been to New York before and given the opportunity I’ll be on the first plane,” said Lorelle, whose favourite sandwich is egg and lettuce.
The New York Sandwich Safari includes two return economy airfares to New York, seven nights’ twin share accommodation in a four-star hotel, as well as the opportunity to compete against the best sandwich makers in the world at the World Sandwichship in October, which will be held in Sydney in October.
