Magnificent kites to fill sky over Long Beach

LONG BEACH — Celebrating the delight of flying kites on the beach, the Washington State International Kite Festival welcomes kite enthusiasts to Long Beach, Aug. 15 through Aug. 21. This free, weeklong, summer festival includes hands-on workshops, spectacular displays, thrilling competitions, graceful kite ballets, and more. Highlights include a magical, lighted night fly and mass ascensions of over 250 kites. The official event program can be downloaded at www.tinyurl.com/3md4lly.

Each year the festival invites famous kite designers and flyers from around the world to share their expertise. Featured flyers for 2011 are Bas Vreeswijk, from the Netherlands, internationally known for his bold and beautiful appliqué designs and aerial kite photography (www.playingwiththewind.nl) and Karl Longbottom, from the United Kingdom, an engineer by trade with a worldwide reputation for the excellent quality, precision, balance and flying characteristics of his kites including pterodactyls, fighting pants, delta sleds, doves, and more (www.longbottom.org.uk/).

Beyond kite watching, kite enthusiasts of all ages are invited to participate in kite building, flying lessons and friendly competitions, as well as hands-on activities, throughout the festival.

Long Beach has been called the ‘Kite Capital of the U.S.’ — a distinction attributable to dependable ocean breezes over acres of open sand, ideal for complicated and free kite displays. Kite shops, resident kite flyers, and the beloved World Kite Museum & Hall of Fame provide enjoyment for longtime kite enthusiasts and first-time flyers alike. For event and visitor information, please call the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau toll-free at 800-451-2542 or visit www.funbeach.com .

MAKE is website, magazine, blog and more. They promote do-it-yourself electronics, carpentry, programming, and pretty much anything else you can think of. This video showcases Cris Benton, a professor at UC Berkley, who talks about his passion for kite aerial photography.

I was raised in the suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio. After high school, I left for Western Kentucky University where I obtained degrees in photojournalism and cultural anthropology. I am currently employed by CityBeat, an arts and entertainment weekly in Cincinnati. The work I am doing here is very rewarding and I suspect it will continue to be. I am available for freelance work in all areas of photography.
