Bill Scott was a great friend
PROMINENT South West identity Bill Scott has died. His funeral was held in Busselton yesterday.Mr Scott, an Order of Australia Medal recipient, was a former Capel shire president, however he spent his later years in Busselton before moving to Perth several weeks ago.
He was also a Justice of the Peace and in that role swore in a number of Busselton councillors, including those elected at the recent local government poll.
Mr Scott’s long-time farming friend Cr David Reid paid this tribute to him.
“Bill was born in Busselton on January 9 1933 and died at Fremantle Hospital on Boxing Day, December 26, 2011.
“He graduated with a Diploma in Agriculture from Denmark School of Agriculture in 1949 and was a school prefect (together with his best mate Ivan Crosby and myself).
“In 1951 Bill and I were part of the first national service intake of compulsory three months’ training. We both emerged as corporals.
“Bill was a successful Elgin dairy farmer, later expanding to Wonnerup, Wilga, and Boyup Brook.
“He was elected to the Shire of Capel in 1980.
“Bill served 19 years on council, 11 as president.
“In 1999 Bill was made an Honorary Freeman of the Capel shire.
“He was an active member of the then Farmers Union for approximately 20 years, chairing the dairy executive section and was the WA delegate to the Milk Producers Council of Australia and New Zealand.
“Following the Victorian ‘Ash Wednesday’ bushfires of 1983, Bill organised the donation of 250 breeding stock from South West farmers to Victoria. They left from his Wonnerup farm.
“In 2000 he was awarded the OAM for his contribution to local government, Farmers Federation and the community.
“Bill served on the WA Grants Commission for some six years, chaired the South West Country Shire Councils Association and was a member of the Bush Fires Board of WA.
