Fort Polk Progress seeks to predict region's destiny

The Vernon Parish Chamber of Commerce conducted its general membership meeting for August at Catfish Junction Wednesday during a dutch treat luncheon. Speaker for the event was Mike Reese, of Fort Polk Progress. Reese (center) is shown here speaking with Greater Vernon Parish Chamber of Commerce President Ranelle Birmingham (second from left). Read more about the meeting in the Friday edition of the Leesville Daily Leader.    Reese refreshed the group's memory concerning Fort Polk Progress, which had its beginnings as a Chamber committee and has since grown into its own entity over the years as people have realized the economic importance of Fort Polk and its troops. Now a 501c(3), Fort Polk Progress seeks to build consensus concerning the Army base and its impact on the region and thereby be in a position to aggressively market Fort Polk as a home for new and established brigades, ensuring the base's economic footprint not only remains in the region but also grows. With federal budget tightening, communities across the nation that are largely dependent on military bases are actively lobbying the Department of Defense for new missions as well as established missions, said Reese. Fort Polk Progress would seek to do the same thing for Fort Polk with the end result being more troops stationed here, which in turn would result in more federal dollars being invested here and more economic development for the entire region. The group was also provided updates from the Chamber's various committees. Malcolm Morris with the Transportation Committee provided information on two initiatives. The committee is working toward the four-laning of La. 8 to the Sabine River. Morris said that Texas is in the planning stages of four-laning a bridge over the river. In addition, the committee is trying to get more funding for the four-laning of La. 117 from La. 8 to La. 6. An environmental assessment has already been completed on the project to Peason.
