Indiana Hall honors Hardesty, Zellers
“It was a nice surprise,” Cantu said. “I didn’t really see that one coming.”
Cantu and Williams were both Indiana All-Star selections in 1987. With the Stars, Williams averaged 19.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Western Boone advanced to semi-state and finished 20-2.
Williams and Cantu were teammates in AAU ball for Love’s Carpet when they won the national championship.
“She’s the one that got me into summer ball,” Cantu said. “We used to drive down to New Palestine to practice. She was a very strong player. She ended up at IU playing basketball.”
But it was a game against Williams that stands out to Cantu as the highlight of her 1987 season.
“Our best game was against Western Boone, ranked No. 6 in the state, and we upset them in overtime,” she said. “That was pretty fun.”
Cantu remains Crawfordsville’s only girls Indiana All-Star. She averaged 24.3 points and 11.5 rebounds her senior year.
“I had a wonderful point guard in Laurie Pyle that was understanding and a really nice group of kids,” she said. “They knew that I was trying to achieve getting on the All-Star team and they were very helpful. We ran a lot of offense through my position and we just got it going. We didn’t achieve as much as a team as we wanted to. We never won the sectional. (Coaches) Daryl and Julie (Hobson) always made sure we had access to the gym and we got a lot of playing time.”
Cantu is still fourth in Athenians history in scoring behind Mandi Johnson, Cari Fruits and Brittany Froedge — all of whom played more career games. Her 413 points as a senior stands second in school history for points in a season behind Johnson’s 488 points in 2008-09, but Johnson played nine more games. Cantu also has three games in the top seven highest scoring individual games in school history — putting up 34 her senior year against Frankfort and 31 twice the year before against Frankfort and Covington.
