Radiosurgery systems offer noninvasive way to target tumors

Fred Williard was a three-year survivor of colon cancer and struggling with the effects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease when a routine X-ray showed a small spot on his lung last October. His cancer had returned.

The 72-year-old Wayne Twp. man started chemotherapy, but he couldn’t tolerate it. He already knew he wasn’t a candidate for surgery because of his COPD. Sick and discouraged, he was ready to give up.

“He was willing to just do nothing. That was very hard for me to hear,” said his daughter, Susan Blough.

Then, his oncologist told him about a radiological surgery called CyberKnife that PinnacleHealth-Fox Chase Regional Cancer Center would be offering when it opened in April. If he could wait until then, it might be a good option for him.

The CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery system is a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors. It works by accurately delivering high beams of high-dose radiation to a specific area without damaging surrounding tissues, said Dr. Brij Sood, director of the PinnacleHealth-Fox Chase Cancer Center , which has the only CyberKnife in central Pennsylvania.

“Previously with lung cancer, the surgeon would have to take out the whole lobe. Here we are treating three to four millimeters around the tumor and there is no cutting. It kills the cells and they disintegrate,” Sood said. “It is saving lives and improving quality of life and giving alternatives as good as surgery to those who were not candidates for surgery.”

The CyberKnife is just one type of radiosurgery system that is expanding treatment options for hard-to-treat tumors. Other area hospitals, including Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Holy Spirit’s Oakwood Cancer Center , offer targeted treatments with the Gamma Knife or linear accelerators.
