Our kids have got the message loud and clear but adults are still turning their noses up at fruit and veges.
Around half of Kiwi men and a third of women are not eating enough fruit and vegetables, results from the Health Ministry's adult nutrition survey show. And while healthy eating resulted in increased productivity and fewer sick days at work, many were struggling to keep up healthy habits in the workplace, information from the Five Plus a Day trust showed.
About a third of the typical adult diet is consumed at work.
But eating on the run, workplace morning teas, catered lunches and vending machines were contributing to poor habits."When I talk to workers from building sites, banks, law firms and IT companies, it still amazes me some eat so little fruit and vegetables," nutritionist Claire Turnbull said.
"A lot of people swear they eat five plus a day, but when they write down what they're eating they realise they don't."
A recent Sunday Star-Times poll of more than 1000 readers found 86 per cent bought food and threw it away, and more than half of that was fruit and veges.
Canned fruit in juice, and frozen fruit in smoothies were also good ways of eating fruit, Turnbull said, while fruit with breakfast and as an afternoon snack, and a handful of veges with lunch and two handfuls with dinner could make all the difference.
The Five Plus a Day trust says a household of four could buy a week's worth of fruit and vegetables for about $40.
Dietary guidelines recommend three servings of veges and two of fruit each day.
Research shows a diet rich in fruit and veges can help lower the risk of various conditions, including cancers, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and osteoporosis.
