Already stunning Sochi, Russia, spruces for 2014 Olympics
My friend Alan Barr, from Blount County, and I had just arrived in Sochi, Russia, early that morning. Following check-in and a quick breakfast at our hotel we had spent the day exploring this popular Russian resort on the Black Sea. We had told no one of our whereabouts and knew no one in the city.
Back at the hotel, the lady who had checked us in 12 hours earlier was on her mobile phone.
"Phone call", she said, in Russian, handing me the phone. A male voice on the phone directed, "Go stand on beach. We meet you in five minutes."
I did as instructed. Alan and I strolled a few yards from the hotel plaza to the beach and awaited our mystery caller. Recalling Russia's past I speculated the KGB — the Russian intelligence agency now uses the acronym FSB — wanted to meet the strangers in town,
Right on schedule a gentleman in his 30s and a lady of like age appeared out of nowhere. "Follow us," he said. We followed.
Just past the hotel we entered an outdoor café and were directed to a table for six. "Have a seat." We did. Another gentleman in his 40s arrived and sat next to me.
"What is your name?" "Where are you from?" "Why are you here?" KGB for sure!
The arrival of 14-year old Christy erased my suspicion. As Christy explained in fluent English, the last man to arrive was her father and had asked her to join us as our interpreter.
The gentleman I spoke with on the phone, Jenya, was the manager of our hotel and two other Stavropols in Sochi. The lady, Valentina, was his wife, and Christy's father, Sami, was an assistant hotel manager. Not KGB!
Our hosts were simply interested in meeting the rare American visitors to Sochi and promoting their business and city. Their gracious hospitality included a sumptuous meal of "shashlik" (grilled skewered chunks of lamb and vegetables), lots of laughter and much conversation in broken English and fractured Russian with helpful interpretations by Christy.
