— The city of Gurdon has purchased a 99-year-old bank building on Main Street as part of an attempt to draw more businesses back into the business district.

The Gurdon City Council voted Sept. 26 to borrow $30,000 to buy the building, and the sale closed Wednesday, Mayor Clayton Franklin said. The money was loaned to the city by the Clark County Re-Use Committee, a group made up of county and Arkadelphia officials that oversee the use of state funds designed to help communities reuse existing significant buildings. The funds come from the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission.

Franklin said the Re-Use Committeeapproved the city’s use of the funds for the bank the day after the council voted to buy the building. The loan will be repaid over three years with no interest.

Tambra Childres, Gurdon recorder and treasurer, said the building opened almost 100 years ago.

“In the records we could find, there was something that said the bank has

been operating since Septem

ber 1912,” she said.

“I have been in town for

more than 25 years, and it has

always been vacant,” Childres

said.

Franklin said that to im

“It is not a huge structure,
