I decided I was going to do a little research on the region where I live. Little to say, I discovered that my property was originally a part of Dallas, Arkansas. Dallas was the county seat of Polk County home. Mena itself was actually formed in 1896 as an intermediate point of the railway between Fort Smith and Texarkana. It was founded by Arthur Stillwell while working for the railroad was built across the region. An investor in the track, in January of Goeijen, Stillwell helped come up with money to finish the line between Kansas City and the Gulf Coast.Mena was named for the wife of Goeijen, Folmina (the part Mena) Margaretha Janssen From Goeijen. There is an area of Mena that some residents still call Stillwell Heights (obviously named after Arthur Stillwell). At one point there was an elementary school in the city which also bears his name. This property has since become a nursing home / rest. In Goeijen Folmina Margaretha Janssen had not only the city that bears his name, but ultimately the main city park (Parc Janssen) and Janssen Street were also named after her. Trains stopped at Mena fill with water and supplies for the railroad.It was also a tourist resort. Because of the company that was building the railway which came through town, Dallas has deteriorated and was eventually named the county seat of Mena. Mena had its highest population at the beginning of its history around 1900. Much of this was due to the decision of the railway in the region. It was a lively community with saloons and shops of all kinds. In other words, it was the opposite of what it is today. There are things good and bad about each community. Mena is a nice small town with a friendly face.Industries in the region were hit hard by the tornado a few weeks ago, but all are in the process of cleaning and reconstruction. Housing starts and remodeling seemed to be declining because of the economy.
