Compromise key to London 2012's Ramadan clash
Bird lovers, dog walkers, activists of Public Health, taxi drivers ... London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, LOCOG to his friends, managed to annoy everyone at one time or another over the last six years.
But fans of tufted ducks and the enemies of Big Macs is one thing, upsetting almost a quarter of the world is another, and this seems to have happened when it became clear that the Games next year coincides with Ramadan, the holiest month of Islamic calendar, a time when Muslims are supposed to refrain from eating and drinking during the day.
For athletes expected in 2500 or Muslim in London in 2012 - not to mention the much larger number of officials, spectators, staff and volunteers - it could not be worse time: the most important date in their lives professional clashes with the most important time in their spiritual life.
The reaction of some sections of the Muslim community was one of outrage at the insensitivity of LOCOG, while others questioned whether the Games could be moved to avoid the inconvenience of fasting that competitors would face.
It was, it seemed, a public relations disaster, a serious blow to interfaith relations in the UK and only the most basic sports for the Games organizers would be repeated "all about the athletes."
But there was always something that troubled me about this particular Olympics "crisis" when it exploded in 2006. There was anger all right, it just felt a bit artificial. After all, the proposed dates for 2012 were in London in the bid book published in 2004. The timing of Ramadan is based on the lunar calendar of Islam, as it moves. But his movements are easy to follow, 11 days before each year.Muslim athletes, used to dealing with the challenge of Ramadan, the confrontation should have known long before it became a media storm.
It seemed so unfair to blame the LOCOG for scheduling. The International Olympic Committee gave the 2012 candidate cities for a window of seven weeks (July 15 to August 31) in which the Games have been staged. With Ramadan, sitting in the middle of this (July 21 to August 20), which ever two weeks, the cities have chosen would have coincided with some of the rapids.
