Battling for survival
THE weather may have conspired against Worcestershire last week in Southampton, but their nearest and dearest did them a massive favour.
With Warwickshire, who I was told previous week were so poor that Yorkshire would fill their boots with points, crushing the White Rose county inside of three days, the New Road men climb out of the drop zone in LV= County Championship Division One with a rain-affected draw.
The seven precious points at the Rose Bowl put them two clear of Yorkshire and 22 ahead of Hampshire.
Yet although Sussex sit 19 clear of Worcestershire, the Hove men are by no means safe from an immediate return to Division Two.
With games against Durham and Nottinghamshire, not to mention the trip to New Road next month. It is hard to see where Sussex are going to pick up that one win that will almost certainly ensure there Division One survival.
Yorkshire, despite being mauled by a Bears’ team missing Chris Woakes last week, are facing a return clash with a Woakes’ led Warwickshire on Wednesday.
If Ashley Giles’ side can do that without their star all-rounder, just imagine what they will do with him in the XI.
Yorkshire then entertain Somerset at Headingley in their final match of the campaign.
Marcus Trescothick’s side are still in with a shout of securing the title, while Martyn Moxon’s men are without skipper Andrew Gale.
With so much on this encounter, I feel that Yorkshire may just prevail, as long as the weather doesn’t conspire against them.
Worcestershire face a title-chasing Lancashire at New Road on Wednesday and having come close up at Blackpool a couple of weeks ago, the addition of Kemar Roach and a home wicket to suit their fiery West Indies pace man, Steve Rhodes ’ side can send the Red Rose men home with their tails between their legs.
Sussex will be hell bent on revenge when they visit County headquarters next month, but I think Worcestershire will complete the double over the team they were promoted with last term.

Mountain Biking in the Yorkshire Dales weekend accomodation ...
Hit the Hills in the Yorkshire Dales 19th-21st August 2011
What an amazing weekend of mountain biking in the Yorkshire Dales. It was the first Hit the Hills weekend so I was super keen to make sure it ran smoothly. I had spent the previous weeks running through the format, getting the menu right and ensuring everything was in place to deliver a fantastic weekend.
After reading through the feedback I am very happy to say that everybody had a great weekend and loved the concept so letâs run through what went onâ¦â¦â¦
On Friday I arrived about 6pm to find that two guests had beaten me there. They had taken a day off work for a quick blast round Gisburn. I presented them with a complimentary beer, and then got cracking with making dinner.
Whilst making dinner the rest of the guests arrived. I showed them to their rooms and handed out some more complimentary beers and finished making dinner. This worked out quite well as we all sat down for dinner at the same time and they soon demolished (both portions) of the Steak and Ale Pie. In between courses I ran through the format of the weekend, suggested they make themselves at home, help themselves to Tea and Coffee whenever they liked and pick my brains on the best trails in the area. Dessert went down well too: Rice Pudding with homemade Strawberry Jam. Nice!
Everybody had brought plenty of booze so after dinner the beers flowed while everybody got to know each other and discussed where they would be riding the next day.
The next morning I was up at 7:30 baking the bread for breakfast and packed lunches as the guests slowly appeared. Tea, Coffee, fruit juice, cereal, porridge and a bacon sandwich or scrambled eggs on toast ensured everybody was well fuelled and ready to Hit the Hills.
The packed lunches were ready and by the time breakfast was over everybody had decided to ride together so I tagged along to point them all in the right direction, the route was epic!
