End in sight to chilly weather
Sunny skies are on the horizon and set to bring a little warmth and relief to the country after days of misery.
But while the end of the polar blast was now in sight, some areas still have a weekend of icy cold showers to endure.
MetService forecaster Ian Gall said the east coast of the North Island from Gisborne to Wellington could expect showers today, easing tomorrow.
A newly released National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Satellite image shows much of the country is covered in snow, follow the dumping that even touched the usually winterless Northland.
Rain was also expected on the South Island's west coast and far south for at least a few days.
But the rest of the country could rejoice in the knowledge that clear skies were forecasted for at least the next week, Gall said.
"Generally speaking it's going to be good weather, but frosty in some places," he said.
"There will certainly be none of the excitement we've had earlier this week - it should be a pretty clear weekend for most people."
This week's once-in-a-generation storm saw snow falling to sea level for three consecutive days in Wellington, rare snowfalls in Auckland and a blizzard in Christchurch.
Climate scientist Georgina Griffiths of the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), said Auckland experienced its coldest day since records began in 1961.
Wellington Airport recorded its second coldest day there since records began in 1959 and Gisborne also recorded its second lowest temperature since 1940.
The snow caused roads and schools to close, public transport to stop running and power outages to thousands of homes.
While the temperature was slowly rising and the snow had dissipated, Gall said it would still be winter as usual, with frosty conditions and snow on the hills for some time yet.
