Google compra Motorola para jugar fuerte en telefonía móvil
Google anunció ayer que comprará al fabricante de teléfonos celulares Motorola Mobility Holdings por 12.500 millones de dólares en efectivo, en la mayor adquisición de su historia. La operación promete otorgarle al gigante de internet un bagaje de propiedad intelectual en telefonía móvil ideal para enfrentar a sus clásicos competidores Apple y a Microsoft.
Sin embargo, al adquirir Motorola, el megabuscador aleja a sus socios en hardware que usan su software libre Android. El presidente ejecutivo de Google, Larry Page, buscó calmar los nervios resaltando ayer que Android seguirá abierto a todos. "El peligro es que otros fabricantes de teléfonos móviles se sientan dejados de lado", dijo el especialista de tecnología de Nomura Securities Richard Windsor.
"Motorola es el jugador más débil. Esto podría verdaderamente hacer colapsar a toda la comunidad", agregó.
La incursión de Google en el terreno del hardware se produce semanas después de su fallido intento por comprar patentes de la quebrada Nortel.
Las acciones de Motorola Mobility se dispararon ayer un 59 por ciento, mientras que los papeles de Nokia subieron más de un 10 por ciento por especulaciones de que la compañía finlandesa es ahora un posible objetivo de compra.
La operación que tomó por sorpresa a Wall Street parece marcar un cambio en la estrategia de una compañía del Silicon Valley que se focalizó en apuntalar su emporio en internet con incursiones en áreas como video y redes sociales.
Poco después de haber fracasado en su intento por comprar miles de patentes de la quebrada firma Nortel, el jefe legal de Google, David Drummond, acusó a Microsoft, Apple y Oracle, entre otras, de colusión para bloquear el software Android cada vez más popular mediante la compra de patentes.
Page se hizo eco de los comentarios de Drummond en una conferencia telefónica, diciendo que Motorola tiene una sólida cartera de patentes que protegerá a Android de "amenazas anti competitivas".
