Supporters pack hearing for man who killed grizzly
Correction: The grizzly killed by Jeremy Hill was a male who was 2 years with an adult female grizzly and another young grizzly bear, according to Idaho Fish and Game. This story gave the wrong kind for the bear that was shot, based on inaccurate information in Boundary County.
A man of the Boundary County pleaded not guilty today to illegally killing a female grizzly in his yard.
So many friends and family members showed up to support Jeremy Hill to his indictment that the hearing was moved to a larger room at the U.S. courthouse in Coeur d'Alene.Hill, 33, faces a charge of killing a grizzly - a species federally protected.
Supporters said that Hill, a father of six children, has acted responsibly in the shooting of the female grizzly, May 8, which emerged with two cubs in the yard of his home near Porthill, Idaho, while his children playing outside.
"It seems unfair to me that someone would be charged when they were protecting their families," state Sen. Shawn Keough, R-Sandpoint, said after the hearing. "I'm at a loss to understand why the U.S. government continues what the way they are."
After shooting the grizzly with a bolt action rifle, Hill contacted the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.
"Jeremy did the right thing, he called Fish and Game," said Keough. "I think it really sets a prosecution effort to return the grizzly bear recovery. ... People say, 'Boy, if I did, there is no way that I report. "It's a human reaction."
Hill's wife and six children - the oldest is 14 and the youngest is an infant - were present at the arraignment. The family declined comment.
A jury trial was scheduled for October 4.If convicted of illegally killing protected species by the Federal Hill is liable to penalties of up to one year in prison and fines of up to $ 50,000.
