WA State Senate Approves Two New Benton County Judges - KNDO/KNDU ...

KENNEWICK, Wash-- The Washington State Senate approved a bill that adds two new Benton County District Court Judges.

During last year's legislative session State Congress voted to limit the powers of District Court commissioners. The state legislature also wants to have all judicial positions in Washington be elected.

Here in Benton County we have two District Court commissioners. The law made covering trials less flexible for the judges.

The District Court Judges and local legislatures wanted to convert the commissioner positions to judicial seats. Judge Holly Hollenbeck traveled to Olympia in support of the bill and worked with state representatives from our region to get it approved.

"This has been one of the highlights of my judicial career to go and testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee in favor of this bill. It was really a very positive experience. We're so proud of our local legislature, and the help they've given us both within the Senate and the House," said Hollenbeck.

This may be a new trend that many other counties in the state start doing. One of the District Court commissioners is close to retiring and they hope the other commissioner can be converted into a judge.
