Montclair declares a state of emergency as Hurricane Irene approaches
Montclair - The Township of Montclair is the establishment of a state of local emergency as hurricane approaches.
Montclair police are considering banning the use of personal vehicles on local roads - and could even wrap some parts of the city by 6 hours tonight.
"This measure allows the district staff to conduct rescue and cleanup operations in all areas of the township affected by this storm," read the statement of the city.
A press conference is set to air on local public access channel 34.
The neighboring cities are handling the storm differently. Of 2 p.m., police in the nearby towns of Bloomfield and Verona had no plans to close roads or prohibit the use of personal vehicles.
In the county of Union, Scotch Plains is preparing emergency shelters in the "unlikely" chance to evacuations, according to a statement made by Mayor Nancy Malool. Updates will be posted on scotchplainsnj.com.
