Solyndra not scaring Obama

AURORA, Colo. — President Barack Obama isn’t letting Solyndra scare him away from pushing a green energy agenda.

Pivoting off a State of the Union address in which he vowed not to “walk away from the promise of clean energy,” Obama doubled down Thursday by highlighting incentives for windmills, solar panels and natural gas vehicles during visits to key battleground states Nevada and Colorado.

The energy offensive comes a week after Obama’s reelection campaign dedicated its first commercial of the year to Solyndra, responding to the Koch brothers-linked nonprofit group Americans for Prosperity and its $6 million ad buy attacking the White House for its work to prop up the failed California solar company.

It’s a risky move for Obama given how Solyndra tarnished his energy brand with a series of embarrassing emails showing aides fretting over the political implications of the company’s bankruptcy, as well as images of the FBI raiding its corporate headquarters. Republicans show no signs of letting the controversy die out, either in Congress or on the campaign trail.

But the White House sees a much bigger benefit — keeping America in the race against foreign competitors for clean-energy jobs, reminding its own political base that it’s not being abandoned — that makes it worth the gamble compared with the political downside of Republicans constantly hammering Obama with charges of “crony capitalism” given Solyndra’s ties to campaign donors.

“We’re not going to cede the wind industry or the solar industry or the battery industry to China or Germany because we’re too timid to make that same commitment here in the United States,” Obama said during remarks at Buckley Air Force Base here. “We’ve subsidized oil for a very long time, long enough. It’s time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry that’s never been more profitable. We’ve got to double down on a clean-energy industry that’s never been more promising.
