Six million pinks expected to return this year
It is only a matter of time before anglers will be blushing with excitement over the upcoming pink salmon return.
Forecasts call for six million pinks to flood Puget Sound during the next two months.
"The overall expectations are for a pretty darn good fishery, and I've seen some reports there are already pinks in Area 11 (south central Puget Sound)," Steve Thiesfeld, the state Fish and Wildlife Puget Sound salmon manager said.
While this summer's forecast is three million fewer pinks than the 2009 record return — pinks only return in odd-numbered years — Thiesfeld says it will be an abundant run.
Another 17 million pinks are expected back in the Fraser River in Canada, which will boost catches in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and San Juan Islands.
Larry Bennett, head state Fish and Wildlife checker in the Strait, said the pink catch hit an all-time high at Sekiu during the past week.
Another fisheries biologist fishing off Bush Point on the west side of Whidbey Island says the humpies (a term the male fish receive for a distinct hump that grows on their back at spawning time) were "rolling all over the place" this week.
The huge number means that in almost all marine areas of Puget Sound, except southern Puget Sound, anglers will be able to keep up to four pinks daily.
Shorebound anglers can also get into the action as pinks tend to congregate close to beaches.
Excellent shore areas include Browns Point, Dash Point State Park, Lincoln Park and Seacrest Pier in West Seattle, Golden Gardens, public access from Meadowdale to Mukilteo, Bait Box off the south east side of Whidbey Island, Bush Point and Fort Casey on west side of Whidbey Island, Les Davis Pier, Redondo Pier, North Beach in Deception Pass, Des Moines Pier, Elliott Bay at Pier 86, Spokane Street Bridge and Point No Point.
River anglers will also get their chances at these fish, including the Green, Puyallup, Nooksack, Skagit and Snohomish River systems.
