What: Indiana State Fair
When: Fridaythrough Aug. 21. General hours are 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday-Thursday; 8 a.m.-midnight Fridays; and 8 a.m.-12:30 a.m. Saturdays.
Where: East 38th Street and Fall Creek Parkway on the near-northeast side of Indianapolis. From Fort Wayne, take Interstate 69 south until it becomes Binford Boulevard. Follow Binford until it becomes Fall Creek Parkway, and continue south to the fairgrounds.
Cost: Gate admission $8 adults; and free ages 5 and younger. Discount tickets are $7 at Indiana Walmart stores, CVS/pharmacy stores, Indiana Farm Bureau offices, and the Indiana State Fairgrounds box office.

• The Indiana State Fair is the sixth-oldest state fair in the country, beginning in 1852.
• Famous state fair visitors include Muhammad Ali, Bob Hope, the Beatles, John Phillip Sousa, Sonny and Cher, the Jackson 5, Elvis Presley, John Mellencamp, President John F. Kennedy, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush.
• In 1964, the Beatles performed in the Pepsi Coliseum and in the Marsh Grandstand, which were their only performances in Indiana.
Food fun
Nearly every year at the Indiana State Fair, people eat approximately:
• 14,000 pounds of pork chops
• 14,285 pounds of hot dogs
• 56,000 rib-eye steaks
• 37,160 milkshakes
• 20,000 dips of ice cream
• 10,460 deep-fried Snickers
• 4,350 pounds of Weaver popcorn
• 3,360 pounds of smoked sausage

Bean there
This year has been designated the “Year of Soybeans,” which means they'll be celebrating all the ways soybeans are used — and the huge impact raising them has on the Indiana economy. The Indiana soybean industry is the fifth-largest in the country, a state fair news release said, and the tiny beans feed millions of people as an ingredient in food products and livestock feed.
