Fighting to stay blue after injury, illness

Nobody blames the sergeant. Flowers David if he wanted to leave the Air Force.

He lost his right leg two years ago when he stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan. His left one was severely damaged. One arm was broken in four places. He had 29 operations and months of rehabilitation.

Yet it is not going anywhere.

"Separation from the Air Force is not what I wanted," said Flowers, an explosive ordnance disposal technician. "I worked hard to get where I was, and after seven and a half years, it was not enough for me."

Flowers is one of thousands of airmen injured in battle or strike with an unexpected illness who faced a council disability in the past decade. Since 9 / 11, the number of formal assessments of disability has doubled - from 3,200 to nearly 6,000 in 2010.

About 10 percent of injuries and illnesses are related to combat. Many are indirectly related to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and requirements of the new fitness test, according to Lt. Col. Lorianne Hodge, Deputy Chief of the Air Force Physical Disability Division.Orthopedic injuries such as back pain and knee thing, are the most common, she said.

"We use a lot more members because of the increased operational tempo and increased use of Guard and Reserve," said Hodge. "There is a little more wear and tear and stress on the body."

Steps

The evaluation system of disabled people is a formal process for the Air Force to determine if a pilot is fit for service after illness or injury affects his job performance.

First, a physician refers the aviator to a board of medical evaluation, according to the Air Force. The three doctors who make up the board to investigate condition of the aviator and either allow the pilot to return to work or refer him to another panel called an informal physical evaluation board.

BEPI members - two doctors and a personnel officer - to a record review only and may be one of several recommendations, including the discharge, discharge with severance pay or temporary disability retirement pay. If the airman does not agree with their recommendation, a formal evaluation board of physical or FPEB is convened within 30 days.
